Men's Health Awareness Month

Taking Charge of Your Health

June is Men's Health Awareness Month—a reminder to prioritize the checkups and habits that keep you at your best. Prevention and early detection make a real difference, and a few simple steps can go a long way.

Encourage the men in your life—partners, sons, fathers, friends—to prioritize their physical and mental health. A simple conversation can make all the difference.

Screenings You Shouldn't Skip

Regular checkups help catch problems early. Talk to your doctor about:

+ Blood pressure and cholesterol — key indicators of heart disease risk

+ Colon cancer screening — recommended starting at age 45, or earlier if you have family history

+ Diabetes screening — especially if you're over 45 or have a BMI above 25

+ Prostate cancer — discuss screening options starting at age 50

+ Lung cancer — low-dose CT scans are recommended for adults 50–80 with significant smoking history

Men over 50 should have a yearly physical. Under 50? Every three to five years is a reasonable baseline, but don't wait if something feels off.

An Often-Overlooked Option: Pelvic Floor Therapy

Men have pelvic floors too, and when those muscles become weak or overly tense, issues like urinary leakage, chronic pelvic pain, constipation or erectile dysfunction can follow. Prostate surgery, aging or even chronic back pain can contribute. Pelvic floor physical therapy helps you regain strength and control through targeted exercises and breathing techniques. If you're experiencing symptoms, ask your doctor for a referral.

Connection Matters

Loneliness is more than a feeling; it's a health risk. Research shows loneliness can increase men's risk of heart disease, cognitive decline and premature death. If you've let friendships slip, consider reconnecting: join a group, stay physically active with others or simply schedule regular time with people you trust.

The Hidden Power Behind Your EAP

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) gives you access to short-term counseling at no cost, but there are other perks available, too!

What is an EAP?

An EAP is an employer-sponsored program that offers services to help you deal with the everyday challenges of life that may affect your health, family life and desire to excel at work.

Your EAP Might Offer…

Will Prep

If something unexpected happens to you, having a will can make sure your belongings go to the people you choose. Many EAPs offer online tools to guide you through creating or updating a last will and testament.

Self-Guided Resources

Learn at your own pace! Your EAP may offer online articles and videos on topics like:

+ Finances (budgeting, debt management)

+ Legal Assistance (real estate, divorce)

+ Physical Health (fitness, nutrition)

+ Relationships (marriage, parenting, emotional health)

Consultations with Experts

Some EAPs offer a few free sessions with lawyers or financial experts.

Confidential Support

Whether you’re reading articles or meeting with a counselor, your use of an EAP is confidential and will not be disclosed to your employer.

Cutting unnecessary monthly expenses is a simple way to boost your savings and redirect funds toward more meaningful financial goals. Here are some costs you may be able to trim and alternatives to consider.

  • Grocery Delivery – Fees, service charges and tips can add up quickly.
    • Plan a week of meals and shop in-store.
  • Subscriptions and Premium Apps – Review your recurring charges for streaming platforms and apps and cancel what you don’t use.
    • Look for free or lower-cost options that still meet your needs.
  • Fitness Classes and Gym Memberships – You don’t need a pricey membership to stay active.
    • Try free online workouts, outdoor activities or community fitness groups.
  • Dining Out and Takeout – Restaurants and delivery apps can be convenient, but they’re also expensive.
    • Cook at home and try meal prepping—this can even lead to healthier eating.
  • Single-Use Products – Disposable items like plastic bags, bottled water and razors cost more over time.
    • Save money and reduce waste by switching to reusable options.
